Biography 1895 Born in Hackney 1909 Attended evening classes at St. Martin's School of Art, London 1910-13 Studied on a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art, London 1913 Traveled in France and Italy for several months and then joined Roger Fry's Omega Workshops 1914 Met Wyndham Lewis, left Omega and joined the circle of Lewis, Edward Wadsworth, Frederick Etchells, and Cuthbert Hamilton 1916-18 Served with the Royal Field Artillery in France 1918 Returned to England as official war artist 1920 Met T.E. Lawrence 1923 Contributed drawings to T.E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom 1935-8 Read for a degree in Physics at University College, London 1939 Moved to Oxford with outbreak of war and lived there until 1945, teaching one day at week at Oxford Technical School 1940 Became an official war artist for the Ministry of Information 1956 Published the Vortex Pamphlets in response to Wyndham Lewis' exhibition at Tate Gallery, London 1958 Elected an Associate of the Royal Academy 1966 Elected Royal Academician 1980 Died in London
