Derrick Greaves - b.1927 Click for images. Born Sheffield, Yorkshire. 1938-45 apprenticed as a sign-writer. 1948-52 won Abbey Major Scholarship to study in Italy. 1953 held first solo exhibition at Beaux Art Gallery, London, and another in 1955. Became known as one of the Beaux Arts Quartet, better known as the Kitchen Sink School, but he later exchanged the gritty realism of his early style for a more distilled form of image-making, closer in style to that of Patrick Caulfield than any realist. His paintings are concise, subtle and often witty. His work is represented in many public collections at home and abroad. |
