Taught painting at Hammersmith College of Art, 1957-9 and Bath Academy of Art 1959-65, aslo at the Slade. His first solo exhibition took place in 1957 at Gallery One, London. The Tate held a retrospective in 1973. Denny was one of the first artists in England to respond to American abstract expressionism and to establish an abstract style free of natural associations. At one point, in order to emphasise the objectivity of his paintings, he exhibited them resting on the floor, on the spectator's own ground. His abstract paintings have become increasingly refined. |
