Biography 1898 Born in Castleford, Yorkshire 1916 Began studying to be a teacher 1917 Joined the Army and served on the French front. Gassed at the Battle of Cambrai 1919 Returned to teaching. Enrolled at Leeds School of Art and studied there for two years 1921-23 Won scholarship to study sculpture at Royal College of Art, London. Visited Paris for the first time 1924 Granted Royal College of Art Travelling Scholarship. Appointed instructor in sculpture school for a term of 7 years 1929 Married Irina Radetsky, student at Royal College of Art school of painting 1930 Became member of Seven & Five Society 1932 Appointed head of new sculpture department at Chelsea School of Art 1933 Member of avant-garde group Unit One 1934 Visited Spain 1936 Signed Manifesto against British policy of non-intervention in Spain 1940 Moved to Hertfordshire when London studio damaged by bombing. Appointed official war artist until 1942 1941 Appointed Trustee of Tate Gallery, London 1953 Visited Brazil and Mexico 1955 Appointed to the order of the Companions of Honour. Appointed Trustee of the National Gallery, London 1963 Awarded member of the Order of Merit 1965 Bought house at Forte dei Marmi, near Carrara 1974 Opening of the Henry Moore Sculpture Centre at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto 1977 Formed the Henry Moore Foundation 1978 Major donation of sculpture to the Tate Gallery, London 1982 Opening The Henry Moore Centre for the Study of Sculpture, a new extension of the Leeds City Art Gallery 1986 Died at Much Hadham, Hertfordshire
