Description:

Second state, with all lettering: British Museum and other repositories.

First state: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The scene is the cab stand on the Quai Henri 1V, at the fish market in Dieppe. The title evidently refers to the owner of the cabs. The quotation is from Milton's sonnet on his blindness; "They also serve who only stand and wait".

David Strang printed 16 posthumous impressions (1945-47) for the Sickert trust before cancelling the plate.
